Sri Lanka Defence Services' School opened

His Excellency the President and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka Honourable Mahinda Rajapaksa ceremonially opened the first ever National Defence Services' School (DSS) in Colombo today (Wednesday the 17th of January) .

The school is specially established for the children of the armed forces' and police personnel making another vision of the President's a reality. The first four students, Radeen Nilan Nethmina, Muneera Amir, Ravindu Theekshana and Sathmini Hansika Maduwanthi were enrolled to year 1 class by the President and the First Lady Madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa at a charm ceremony held at school premises this morning.

Making the opening note, the Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera said that the school is starting its activities with 150 students enrolled into five classes of year one from today. He also thanked the Army, Navy and Police civil engineers for their effort in renovating a building built in 1860 so elegantly.

Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Catholic priests invoked blessing to the school at the ceremony.

The president addressing at occasion extended his best wishers to newly established school that it would able to be one of the finest educational institute in the nation in future.

He also highlighted that the education should not only focus on teaching analytical subjects but also developing creative abilities among the children. He requested the staff of the school to do their duty with the utmost commitment since the parents of their students may not be able to look after the matters as the way a normal parents do.

"Their parents have committed their lives for a mission that would benefit all the children of this country. So, it is your responsibility to ensure that the education of these children will not be adversely affected by their absence" he said.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha , Chief Minister Alavi Movulana , Minister Thissa Attanayake, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa , Service Commanders, IGP and senior officials of Ministry of Defence and Education Ministry also graced the occasion.

Minister Thissa Witharana, Governor of Western Province Alavi Movulana and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse also participated for the ceremony



A multi religious ceremony was conducted to invoke blessings to the newly opened school
