Deepavali - The Festival of Light
President Mahinda Rajapaksa in sending his greetings
to all Sri Lankan Hindus on the occasion of Deepavali (Festival of
Lights) says that Deepavali symbolises the victory of good over evil,
light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. In his message
President mention that the Deepavali Festival would being a unifying
force that spreads understanding, tolerance and harmony among all people
irrespective of ethnic, religious, caste or class differences.
He also wishes that this occasion would be a best
occasion for us to redouble our efforts to bring about greater
understanding among our people and restore peace and harmony in the
country.
"May the light of goodwill and peace dispel the
darkness of terror and illuminate our land." President wishes.
Also known as "Diwali" both in India and Sri Lanka,
Deepavali is one of the biggest celebrations for the Hindu faith. It is
also termed as the Festival of Lights. Marking the arrival of the new
moon and a new year in the Hindu calendar, the festival is a great
religious ceremony that is celebrated throughout the country.
This festival has an inspiring significance, for it
symbolizes the victory of good forces over evil forces. The lights and
lanterns are symbolic of this celebration and hope for a bright and
prosperous future with which homes and businesses are traditionally
decorated. Fireworks are added to the glow and color and aura of the
festival. This occasion is common to get together with friends, families
