Wanni liberation operation in progress; 43 terrorists killed

Sri Lanka security forces have continued their military offensive to liberate Wanni from LTTE terror clutches inflicting damages to the enemy yesterday, February 22. According to the military reports 43 LTTE terrorists were killed while 5 others received injuries in yesterday's clashes. Meanwhile, 3 army soldiers made their supreme sacrifice in the battlefront while 26 others received injuries.

In the Jaffna theatre of battle, army snipers deployed in Muhamalai front gunned down an LTTE terrorist around 3.30 p.m. yesterday.

In the same front, troops observed a group of LTTE terrorists and launched an attack with mortar and artillery killing at least 6 terrorists at 9.00 p.m., ground troops confirmed.

An army soldier on duty received injuries due to an explosion of anti-personnel mine in general area Muhamalai.

In the Kilalay front, two army soldiers also received injuries due to the LTTE mortar fire took place last morning, the reports stated.

In the Wanni theatre of battle, in a confrontation took place in general area Navathkulam 2 LTTE terrorists were killed while other 2 received injuries. The clash erupted at 8.35 a.m. and no casualties reported to own troops.

Troops ambushed an LTTE movement and killed 8 LTTE terrorists around 13.05 hours in general area Kallikulam. In the same area, troops launched an attack targeting LTTE bunker defences at 6.10 p.m. Troops confirmed that 7 terrorists were killed and 3 others received injuries due to this attack.

An army soldier was killed in a confrontation took place in general area Mullikulam last afternoon. The damages caused to the enemy due to security forces retaliation are yet to be known.

In Mannar front, troops launched an attack targeting a tractor carrying terrorists around 9.10 a.m. yesterday. Troops confirmed 2 terrorists were killed and the tractor was completely destroyed due to this attack.

In Adampan area, army snipers gunned down an LTTE terrorist around 1.05 p.m. yesterday.

Meanwhile, an army soldier was killed and 2 others received injuries in two separate incidents took place at Perankamam and Adampan areas yesterday, the reports said.

In Welioya front, troops launched a pre-emptive attack targeting LTTE bunker defences in general area Mankindamalai killing 5 LTTE terrorists around 9.45 a.m. yesterday. An army soldier was killed while 4 others received injuries during this clash.

In Andankulam, troops captured an LTTE strong point following a heavy fighting erupted at 10.45 a.m. 6 LTTE terrorists were killed while 6 army soldiers received injuries in this attack. Bodies of LTTE cadres were found along with the following list of items in a subsequent search operation conducted in the area.

  • 01 x Multi Purpose Machine Gun

  • 05 x T 56weapons

  • 01 x T 81 weapon

Meanwhile, 5 LTTE terrorists were killed when the troops attacked LTTE bunker defences at 2.50 p.m. in general area Andankulam. 3 Army soldiers also received injuries due to this incident.

In the same area, 8 army soldiers received injuries in a confrontation took place at 11.00 a.m. The damages to the terrorists due to security forces retaliation are yet to be known.

Limited offensive operations are continued.
