LTTE continues to take heavy beating in the Wanni front

Sri Lanka army continued its counter terrorist offensives in the Wanni region yesterday (February 23) causing heavy losses to the LTTE terrorists. According to the military reports received from the battlefronts, at least 52 terrorists were killed in the clashes erupted in the Vavuniya, Mannar, Welioya and Jaffna areas during the day.

On the Vavuniya battlefront, troops had several clashes with LTTE terrorists in the Vedamkulama, Periyapantrichurichchan, Mullikulama, Palaimoddai, and Sulainamarathamadu areas during the daytime yesterday.

At Vedamkulama, troops while engaged in clearing operation came under a terrorists attack around 9.45.a.m. Troops retaliated effectively and beat off the terrorists. One soldier was killed and another suffered injuries in the incident. LTTE radio transmissions have confirmed that 2 terrorists were injured in the incident.

In the general area Mullikulama, troops attacked terrorists' bunkers in three separate incidents and claimed 7 terrorists were killed. Also, one soldier was killed and 4 others sustained injuries during the same clashes. Separately in the same area, troops ambushed a group of LTTE cadres on the same day evening and claimed that 2 more terrorists were killed in the incident.

At Palaimodai, troops engaged terrorists' bunkers around 10, last morning and claimed 7 terrorists were killed and 3 others injured. Also, one soldier suffered injuries and evacuated to the Vavuniya hospital.

Meanwhile, in the Periyapantrichurichchan area, troops clashed with the terrorists at two occasions with in the course of the day. In one incident, troops ambushed a group of terrorists around 10.15, last morning and claimed that 3 terrorists were killed. In the second incident, troops attacked 3 terrorists' bunkers on the same day morning and claimed 10 terrorists were killed. Also, 5 soldiers suffered injuries in the incident.

In the general area Sulainamarathamadu, army engaged artillery fire at an identified terrorist gathering around 10.15.a.m. LTTE radio transmissions have confirmed that 2 terrorist were killed.

On the Mannar front, troops marching in to the LTTE dominated territory had several clashes with the terrorists in the Perankamam, Adampan and Vaiyattankulama areas yesterday.

In the general area Perankamam, one soldier was killed during a confrontation occurred in the morning. Meanwhile, troops launched an attack at terror bunkers on the same day evening and claimed that 4 terrorists were killed. Troops recovered one T-56 riffle. Also, one solder suffered injuries in this incident.

In the general area Adampan, army snipers claimed that 4 terrorists were shot down during the day. Also, 2 soldiers suffered injuries due to terrorists' fire in the Vaiyattankulama area around 9.35.a.m.

On the Welioya front, troops had two clashes with LTTE terrorists in the Andankulama area during the day. In the first incident troops attacked and captured a fortified stronghold of terrorists' last morning. Troops found 8 bodies of LTTE cadres along with 8 T-56 rifles during the subsequent search. In the second incident troops confronted with a group of terrorists around 9.15, last night and claimed that 2 terrorists were killed and 2 suffered injuries. Also, 2 soldiers sustained injuries.

In addition, 4 soldiers suffered injuries due to anti personnel mine explosion and booby tarps in the Anadankilma area during the day.

Finally on the Jaffna theatre of battle, snipers deployed in the Muhamalai and Kilaly area claimed that 3 terrorists were shot down during the day.

Limited operations are continuing.
