Foreign Ministry condemns assassination of
Ms.Velautham
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs vehemently condemns
the brutal assassination of Ms. Maheshwary Velautham by the LTTE on 13
May 2008. This cowardly incident took place while Ms. Velautham was
visiting her ailing mother in her native village of Karaveddi in Jaffna.
Ms. Velautham served as the Advisor to the Honourable
Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare and
General Secretary of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP). She was
fluent in the three languages used widely in Sri Lanka. As the
representative of her political party, she was also the only woman
member in the All Party Representative Committee (APRC), actively
engaged in bringing about a lasting peace through the democratic
political process initiated by the Government of Sri Lanka.
She paid the highest price in the pursuit of
strengthening Tamil political elements opposing LTTE terrorism. Her
contribution to the democratic mainstream in Sri Lanka is viewed in the
context of political developments taking place in the roadmap toward
peace with the pronouncement of greater devolution to the people in the
North in the setting up of an Interim Advisory Council that would set
the stage for Provincial Elections in the North.
The assassination of Ms. Velautham is the second high
profile political killing the LTTE has carried out in the short span of
two months. Along with the late Cabinet Minister, Hon. Jeyaraj
Fernandopulle, Ms. Velautham was a member of the Tamil speaking
community totally committed to the Sri Lanka Government's roadmap to
peace.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to underscore
to the international community that this contemptible act by the LTTE
once again demonstrates the LTTE's determination to eliminate those in
the Tamil community who are dedicated to the cause of peace and
democratic rights for all people in Sri Lanka.
