Shakthi TV correspondent and EPDP member hacked to death

A journalist, the Jaffna area correspondent for Sirasa, MTV and Shakthi Tv, who had done a comprehensive coverage for the Jaffna Re-awakening trade fair and his friend were hacked to death by unidentified assassins alleged to be LTTE terrorists last evening, May 28.

The bodies of the journalist, Paramarupasinham Devakumar (34), and his friend, Mahendran Varathan (28), were found with deadly cut injuries from general area Navali in Jaffna around 6.00 p.m yesterday.

Despite the warnings by the LTTE's Ellalan force, Paramarupasinham Devakuma has made his fullest effort to provide media coverage for the Jaffna Re-awakening trade fair held at Alfred Doraiappah Stadium last week.

Mahendran Varathan was a member of EPDP's youth core and his father, the former chairman of the Valikamam local government, is also an active member of the EPDP. Mahendan's father has openly criticized the LTTE outfit and had rendered his service voluntarily to the success of the Jaffna Trade Fair and Carnival, EPDP sources said.

Jaffna police is conducting further investigations.
