"People of Jaffna are with us," - Maj General Chandrasiri
Elaborating on the current developments in the Jaffna
peninsula, Commander of the Security Forces, Jaffna, Major General G.A.
Chandrasiri said that the number of LTTE operatives in the District has
dropped drastically and that these cadres are engaged in disruptive
activates to break the peaceful environment in the region.
Speaking to the media a short while ago from the
Security Forces Headquarters in Jaffna, General Chandrasiri said that
the Security Forces have taken effective measures to protect the
civilians from the "Hide and Wait" attacks launched by the terrorists in
the peninsula.
He further added that the motive of such clandestine
attacks of the terrorists is to drive fear into the community and
thereby divert the attention of the security forces away from the
ongoing humanitarian missions to liberate the area from the clutches of
terrorism.
The Commander also said that the people in these areas
are fully aware of the motives and acts of the terrorists and added that
the people themselves have chosen to cooperate with the Security Forces
to thwart such attacks.
"The Tigers were planning to blast the transformers in
Jaffna, but when the people got to know of this, they came to us and
said that they will work together with the forces to protect the
transformers from terrorist attacks, and now the civilians have covered
many transformers in order to prevent terrorists' attacks," he added.
"We operate with two main objectives, one is to defeat
the terrorists in the battle field and the other main objective of all
these efforts is to protect the civilians. Under the directions and the
guidance of the Army Commander we are successfully achieving those two
goals, the people are with us and it's a great strength to us.
