Patriotic Sri Lankan expats pays tribute to valiant troops
05 April 2009 has been a special day for all patriotic
Sri Lankans as the Sri Lankan Armed Forces succeeded in capturing the
last remaining area of the land out side the "No Fire Zone" ( NFZ) from
the LTTE control.
People living in Sri Lanka and around the world opened
their hearts in the SLBC live broadcast on 05 April and expressed their
happiness and gratitude to the heroes of the armed forces on this
magnificent achievement. SPUR NZ wishes to join the millions of Sri
Lankans who are celebrating this news all over the world.
Following are excerpts of the SPUR press release issued on 6th
April, 2009.
Despite requests and warnings pouring in from all over
the world to keep the civilians away from fierce fighting, the LTTE, who
have fixed their heavy artillery guns in densely populated areas, in the
Govt declared NFZ, are still trying to use the civilians a `human
shield' to get international sympathy to avoid annihilation.
UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon has called on the
LTTE leadership at this last moment to allow civilians to leave the
conflict area of their own free will and urged to stop forced
recruitment of children. LTTE has not responded to this call.
Reiterating that there would be no ceasefire, the Army
chief has said that the soldiers had to keep fighting to rescue a large
number of hostages as this was the first time in the world history that
a terrorist organisation has become so ruthless.
"No others have kept their own people as hostages and
forced them to die", he said. Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka said that no
influence - local and international - could prevent the troops marching
forward to liberate the innocent civilians in the NFZ though the
military was experiencing some constrains due to hostages. "We could
finish the LTTE weeks back if civilians are freed", he said. He said
that the operation that will be launched soon to free civilians in the
No Fire Zone will be conducted without causing harm to civilians.
He said that over 12,000 soldiers of three defensive
divisions - 53, 55, 58 and Task Force 8, were in liberating civilians
caged in a coastal stretch of 12 kms in Puthumathalan, Valayanmadam,
Karayamullivaikkal and Vellamullivaikkal while over 40,000 soldiers were
deployed to defend any infiltration by the LTTE. The NFZ is a very
narrow stretch and troops have only three km from the longest point to
reach to the beach front of the NFZ", he said.
Meanwhile, the LTTE senior leaders Theepan, Nagesh,
Gadaffi who was in charge of Prabhakaran's safety and Woman wing leader
Vidusha and Durga have been killed in action on 05 April. This is the
first time in the war against LTTE that such a large number of leaders
have been killed in a single day.
The IDPs fleeing into the Government controlled areas
have reported that completely shaken LTTE Leader Prabhakaran was sighted
hiding in the midst of the IDPs in the no fire zone. The Defence
Secretary has told that it is a matter of time before the civilians
would be freed from the clutches of LTTE and its leader Prabhakaran.
Today, when the Sri Lankan Armed Forces launch this
most important operation in the Sri Lankan history, SPUR NZ wishes the
Sri Lankan Government and the Armed Forces all the strength and courage
to free the civilians with out any casualties.
