Has the UNHRC turned to demoratic terrorism to penalise Sri Lanka
(By: Noor Nizam - Canadian Peace Activist )
The cessation of the fighting in Sri Lanka marks the
welcome end of a prolonged and brutal war. But it also creates a major
issue of immediate concern.
The major issue is the critical plight of the hundreds
of thousands of civilians in the north and east of the country who have
been victimized by the brutality of the LTTE which is a reality to
understand.
The international community failed them during the
fighting by falling short of its commitments under the Responsibility to
Protect (R2P) doctrine. It must not fail them again by leaving them to
the cruelty of International punishment and delaying tactics of stalling
and delaying the IMP loan of 1.9 billion dollars that the IMF has
already worked out to grant Sri Lanka.
The maliciously orchestrated democratic engagements in
the international forums, supported by INGO's like The Coalition to Stop
the Use of Child Soldiers, an umbrella group of global organizations
which includes Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch has a hidden
political agenda. The agenda is to derail and stalemate the generous
functions of a Sovereign State to provide for its citizens there
legitimate need in the aftermath of winning the humanitarian war
achieved by it's friendly army and the will of the people and it's civil
service.
Brutalities of war cannot be denied, but the
humanitarian mission of the Sri Lankan Army under the guidance of
General Sarath Fonseka and Secretary of Defense, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was
never understood by the bullying Western interests who have been toiling
to call for this special session on Sri Lanka. Tuesday's special session
on Sri Lanka was requested by 17 nations, including France, Germany,
Britain, and Canada. A Human Rights Commission special session has been
convened on only 10 previous occasions.
The United Nations Human Rights Council clashed
Tuesday (26) over two competing resolutions on how to provide aid to
thousands of people displaced by the Sri Lankan military campaign
against the LTTE terrorists.
Sri Lanka goes into today's meeting backed by powerful
new allies such as China, which provided much of the military hardware
for the final offensive that defeated the LTTE terrorists last week
after a 25-year war....
Several undecided countries, including Chile and
Mexico, are pressing for a compromise resolution incorporating elements
of both drafts.
Dr. Palitha Kohona, Foreign Affairs Secretary,
Government of Sri Lanka said recently at a gathering in Colombo :
"One obvious victim of the conflict was our economy
- and it suffered immensely during the past 27 years. It is estimated
that the country lost USD 200 billion in lost opportunity. The
importance of targeting Sri Lanka 's economy was recognized. A cynic has
observed that some Western nations have continued to labor under the
"white man's burden" in a different form. The Government adopted a hard
line to this attitude. Instead of succumbing to these pressures, the
Government sought development assistance from other partners and
non-traditional allies and turned to alternative markets where possible.
This effort paid handsome dividends. Iran, for example, pledged over $
1.9 billion in development assistance to Sri Lanka . China 's share of
development assistance topped 1 billion Dollars. Japanese assistance
continued unaffected by the critical approach of Western democracies.
India continued to assist Sri Lanka, including in strategic matters.
While Sri Lanka , confronted with the choice of economic blackmail or
finding an accommodation with terrorism, had to strengthen its ties with
alternative partners. However, it will work assiduously at fostering
traditional ties. We must be pragmatic.
One has to begin to feel that the hypocrisy of the
selected Western and North American states such as Argentina, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Mauritius,
the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland,
Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay supporting the resolution
against Sri Lanka tabled by Switzerland and supported by European
countries is indeed an act of democratic terrorism the West is implying
on one of the oldest democracies in the South East Asian Region or the
Indian Ocean Ring - namely Sri Lanka.
The question now is - HAS THE UNHRC TURNED TO
DEMORATIC TERRORISM TO PENALISE SRI LANKA.
A counter resolution tabled by Sri Lanka and backed by
powerful allies including China, Russia , and India , Indonesia ,
Malaysia , and Egypt supporting Sri Lanka 's counter resolution calls
for the UN to cooperate with the Sri Lankan government in providing
humanitarian assistance.
The countries of the non-aligned movement (except
Chili) the African group and the Organization of Islamic countries today
alleged that the move to call a special UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC)
session on Sri Lanka, showed the double standards of the West when
probing human rights violations.
"We hope that the UNHRC would also put equal emphasis
to other conflicts in Asia or the Middle East, where the US army drone
hit 2% of their targets with a rate of 98% of collared loses," the
Algerian Envoy to the UNHRC said today.
"This showed that this special session was distorted
by double standards which hinder its universality," he added.
Allied countries which supported the resolution
co-sponsored by Sri Lanka urging for immediate international corporation
for reconstruction, resettlement and reconciliation. It also highlighted
the principal of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
What does this means to world DEMOCRACY?
Senior Presidential Advisor and MP Basil Rakapaksa has
the most appropriate answer to the international conspirators:
"The international community is welcome to provide
Sri Lanka with assistance, but it should be according to the wishes of
the people of this country, including the people of the North, Senior
Presidential Advisor and MP Basil Rakapaksa said in a message to the
international community.
"If they want to be our friends, then they should
be genuine friends. We do not want 'monitors,' we need partners. Be our
partners in this task to help our people," said Rajapaksa"
The counter resolution tabled by Sri Lanka calling for
the UN to cooperate with the Sri Lankan government in providing
humanitarian assistance should win over the resolution tabled by
Switzerland at the special sessions of the UNHRC this week.
The so-called gang of international democratic
terrorists at the UNHRC and their vultures INGO's striving to find a way
of living for themselves in providing the "old boys club" of
International politicians and civil servants should be defeated once and
for all by all democratic international allies.
