Rivira Defence Columnist Tissa Ravindra Perera's fourth book 'Wanni Awasan Maha Satana' launched

Defence Columnist of the Rivira newspaper Tissa Ravindra Perera's fourth book 'Wanni Awasan Maha Satana' (The great final battle of Wanni) was launched in Colombo on Thursday (July 9).

Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka was the Chief Guest at the event. The book contained the final phase of the Wanni battle. Mr. Perera's first book was about the initial stage of the government's humanitarian operation that started from Mavil Aru.

Speaking at the event, the Army Commander said that the armed forces were able to win the war against the LTTE after taking a difficult path. He also said that no one could challenge the success of his army after the victory over the Tigers. He said in the last two weeks of the battle against the LTTE he lost some 300 soldiers and overall 5200 soldiers sacrificed there lives in the last three years of the war.

He also revealed that in the year 2000, the army lost a large number of soldiers and officers, but during the short period of the present war the army was able to minimize deaths and casualties and win.

The Commander also praised the political leadership of the country and said he was able to conduct the war successfully because of the leadership of the President. "I did my part militarily and President Mahinda Rajapaksa played his role as the political leader," he said.

Commenting on Mr. Perera's book, the Commander said that the book contains more details about the war. "Mr. Perera is one of the rare journalists in the country and throughout the war he showed his skillfulness by way of writing through the media," General Fonseka added.

Director General of the Civil Defence Force Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera, Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara and Air Force Spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara were also present at the event.
