Marathon runner brings message of peace to Jaffna
A marathon runner who ran from Polonnaruwa to Jaffna
consecutively for 03 days successfully completed his journey on the 20th
of this month.
This feat was accomplished by 46 year old V.A.H.G
Simon a resident of Polonnaruwa, Damminna who represents the Polonnaruwa
District Sports club. The "Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu" concept by the
Minister of Agriculture Hon. Maithreepala Sirisena was the theme by
which this great runner accomplished this journey.
The first leg of the journey was commenced on the 18th
of November; the date birth of H.E the President from Pollonnaruwa to
Madawachchiya. The second leg was from Madawachchiya to Kilinochchi
while the third leg was from Kilinochchi to Jaffna. He traveled a
distance of nearly 300km in 03 days.
Dr. Pushpitha along with a three doctor group of the
Polonnaruwa Hospital was constantly monitoring the health of this
sportsman while also rendering their fullest support to him. The
Mahaweli Sports Authority and the resident villagers also rendered their
support to his feat.
He arrived in the Jaffna Peninsula on the 20th of
November and was given the support of the armed forces in the area.
Despite the bad weather conditions Mr. Simon received assistance and
encouragement from both the security forces and the civilians and was
able to end his journey successfully at the Doraiappa Stadium in Jaffna.
The Mayor of Jaffna Ms. Yogeshwaram Padgunaraja,
Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General L.B.R Mark along with
many officers, other rankers and civilians were present to greet him. A
special plaque was gifted to him by the mayor of Jaffna in honor of the
occasion.
