Three million visitors to North in two months
There have been three million local and foreign
visitors to North in the months of January and February.
This has come about with the opening of the A9
highway. The visits by the large number of tourists have proved to be a
boon to the traders in Jaffna, whose income continue to soar.
It is reported that there has been a huge demand for
ornaments and food items of traders engaged in the cottage industry
among foreign visitors.
They have also shown a great likeness for fruits,
vegetables and sea food for which the North is famous for. Tourism
Minister Achala Jagoda has instructed his Ministry Secretary to take
steps to ensure the minimum damage to the environment resulting from the
heavy influx of tourists to the North and to preserve places of
religious worship and archaeological sites in the North.
Accordingly measures are under way to provide all
facilities to the tourists visiting the North while protecting the
environment and archaeological monuments under a joint program of the
Ministries of Tourism, Defence, Fisheries, Cultural Affairs and National
Heritage and several other Ministries.
