Coconut oil producing plants in North

Moves are underway to establish 10 large scale coconut oil manufacturing plants in the Northern Province, Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratne said.

The factories will be located at Killinochchi, Mullaithivu, Alampill and Pallai and Rs 30 million has been allocated by the Ministry.

The National Coconut Development Authority (NCDA) will enter the project as a public-private partnership venture. Minister DM Jayaratne told the Daily News that the NCDA has planed to produce 20 metric tons of coconut oil per day after commissioning all 10 plants with full capacity.

If there would be any excess production arrangements have been made to export them, the Minister added.

About 30,000 families will get direct and indirect jobs through the project, Jayaratne said. He said he has instructed the NCDA to take immediate steps to promote other coconut based items too.

According to NCDA sources all plants will be commissioned by next year.
