Navy steps up operations to crackdown on illegal activities in the sea

The Sri Lanka Navy has stepped up operations to rein in illegal activities that are taking place in the sea areas. Pointing out the significant role played by the Nvy in routing terrorism, Naval Media Spokesman Capt. Athula Senarath said that surveillance has been strengthened to prevent illegal activities in the sea.

Captain Athula Senarath said a continuous surveillance is being carried out by the Navy utilizing a modern network of radar and electronic devices and also through the deployment of naval vessels round the clock. These operations will prevent re-emergence of terrorist activities, sea piracy and the smuggling of goods, arms and drugs as well as human trafficking. He said the Sri Lanka Navy also plays a vital role in carrying out naval operations in order to protect the natural resources and prevent forging an illegal fishing.

The Naval Spokesman said the geographical location of the island is strategically very much important to cease the shipping lines joining the East and West runs close to the Southern coast and within the sea areas which belongs to the country. He added that the Sri Lanka Navy is carrying out search operations and also assist vessels in distres.
