"Uttama Pooja" - medal awarding ceremony - Puttalama
The brave men and Women of Army Navy Air Force and
Police who sacrificed their noble lives to save the motherland from the
ruthless terrorism in the past 30 years were commemorated and honoured
their beloved parents and wives by awarding "Uttama Pooja" medal.
The ceremony was held in Puttlam on Saturday (18 Dec
2010), Defence Secretary Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa participated as the
chief guest to honour the next of kin of brave men and women.
The Secretary addressing the gathering stated that,
the "Uttama Pooja" medal was the first time in the history to introduce
not only in Sri Lanka but also in the entire world to honour and
decorate next of kin of fallen war heroes. In early occasions medals
were awarded for heroisms and also as service appreciations he further
asserted. He also reminded that during the humanitarian operations
family members of those fallen war heroes acted with much dedication and
those praiseworthy efforts allowed them to do the best at their duties.
His Excellency the president Mahinda Rajapaksa has
given his approval by issuing a special gazette which includes the style
and designation, description, ribbon, eligibility, awarding of the
medal, forfeiture and restoration of the medal.
