The 25th Death Anniversary of two legendary War
Heroes, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Major General Vijaya
Wimalarathne was commemorated recently.
According to Army media, a series of commemorative
events were conducted on Monday (07th) and Tuesday (08th) to mark the
25th death anniversary of Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa.
Commemorative and religious ceremonies were conducted at the Denzil
Kobbekaduwa statue in Anuradhapura town and at the Thanthirimale
Rajamaha Viharaya. A distribution of dry rations to the poor in
Thanthirimale village was carried out together with an alms-giving, Bodhi Pooja and a Dhamma sermon programme at the Thanthirimale Raja Maha
Mrs. Laly Kobbekaduwa, Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka
Armoured Corps (SLAC), Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, Commander,
Security Forces - Wanni, Major General Kumudu Perera, senior officers,
family members of the late War Hero were also present at the occasion.
The commemorative ceremony of Late Major General
Vijaya Wimalarathne was held on Sunday (06th) at the Gajaba Regiment
Headquarters at Saliyapura, Anuradhapura. Commander of the Army,
Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake also joined the commemorative
programmes at Saliyapura on the invitation of Colonel of the Regiment,
GR, Major General Shavendra Silva. The Army commander also joined in to
place floral tributes at the late War Heroes memorial. He unveiled a photo
of Major General Vijaya Wimalarathne and also planted a tree at the Gajaba Regimental centre. Mrs. Vijaya Wimalarathne and family members
were also present at the occasion.
An all-night 'Pirith' chanting ceremony followed by an
alms-giving for 100 monks, headed by Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri
Gnanarathana Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya Chapter was conducted
at the Gajaba Regiment Centre.
Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, together with
Major General Vijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Colonel
H.R Stephen, Colonel G.H Ariyarathne, Colonel Y.N Palipana, Commander
Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant
Commander C.B Wijepura and Private W.T Wickremasinghe were victims of an
LTTE landmine explosion at Araly Point in Kayts, Jaffna on 8th August
