Coast Guard rush to contain oil spill`
The Oil Spill Response Management Team of the Sri
Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) was rushed to contain an oil spill in Kolonnawa
recently (16th January). According to Coast Guard media, the team was
sent to contain a furnace oil spillage in Kolonnawa in response to a
request from the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminal Limited (CPSTL).
The SLCG Oil Spill Response Management Team which
specializes in such pollution control operations took up the challenging
task, assisted by clean-up teams employed by the Ceylon Petroleum
Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL), together with the Marine
Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA). By Thursday (18th) they had
managed to clear 145,000 k liters of furnace oil.
