Colombo Port sets record in container handling volume
Colombo Port has set a new record in container
handling volume on Tuesday, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said.
Setting the new record the Colombo Port handled 22,422
TEUs on February 9. The previous record of highest volume of 22,186 TEUs
was reported by the SLPA on April 28, 2015.
The recorded container volume was received to the port
from 22 vessels while 10 of them operated under the SLPA.
The data further shows 9, 875 TEUs handled at Colombo
port out of total 22,422 TEUs has been carried out by the SLPA.
Commenting on the feat, Ports and Shipping Minister
Arjuna Ranatunga said the support of everyone serving in the Ports
Authority is required to gain many achievements this year.
He said the Ports Authority had displayed a positive
growth last month and achievement of such a growth is significant after
Minister Ranatunga said that he will introduce the
overall development plan to the three terminals to carry out their
operations towards the development of the Colombo Port.
The Colombo port operations are carried under three
terminals - Jaya Container Terminal, Unity Container Terminal and South
Asia Gateway Terminal. The Jaya Container Terminal is operated under the
SLPA while the other two are owned by the private sector.
The Minister said the government hopes to introduce a
strategic business plan for all these terminals to carry out their
business operations towards the development of Colombo port.
