Exercise Cormorant Strike VIII enters 'Critical Engagement' phase

President addresses troops involved in 'Exercise Cormorant Strike'

State Minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene graced the 'Critical Engagement' phase of the ongoing 'Cormorant Strike Exercise' carried out at Kuchchaveli in Trincomalee this morning (14th Thursday, September). Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. Kapila Waidyaratne PC was also present to witness the proceedings.

Addressing the troops through a video link, President Maithripala Sirisena conveyed his good wishes to the troops involved in the Exercise. Appreciating the dedication, courage, heroism, efficiency and discipline of the armed forces, he said that the country's security forces have come under wide recognition. He noted the importance of such military exercises in providing training and experience to the armed forces. The President also expressed his gratitude to all, including the foreign participants for the successful completion of the Exercise.

During the mock operations, a simulated multi-pronged joint amphibious attack on enemy hideouts was carried out. The Exercise is conducted with the aim of enhancing the preparation, operational readiness and efficiency of Special Operational Forces.

Mock operations carried out this morning at Kuchchaveli saw the combined involvement of Navy craft including mechanized landing craft, IPCs and gun boats and Helicopters and AN 32s of the Air Force, with ground troops.

Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Travis Sinniah, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy, members of the diplomatic corps, state officials and senior police and tri forces officers were also present at the occasion.

The joint tri-service Field Training Exercise (FTX), 'Exercise - Cormorant Strike VIII - 2017' is organized by the Sri Lanka Army for the 8th consecutive time this year. A combined strength of 2675 tri forces personnel and 69 foreign military participants and observers from 13 countries are taking part at this year's maneuvers. The Exercise Operations got off the ground on 03rd (September) from the Operational Headquarters in Minneriya and was carried out based in the Eastern region of the country.
