Fillip to uplift educational standards of Jaffna students

[March 14 2019]

Adding strength to its commitment to uplift the educational standards of the children in the North, Security Forces in the Peninsula has yet again extended its hand to a group of deserving students to ease their commute between their schools and homes by facilitating the donation of a stock of new bicycles.

Troops of Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) took this initiative to distribute 50 new bicycles among deserving students living in remote areas in Jaffna. The donation was made possible by the sponsorship of the Lawyers Association of Hulsfdorf Magistrate Courts in Colombo.

The ceremony to distribute these bicycles among the Jaffna students was held under the patronage of Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi on Sunday (10 March). General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Roshan Seneviratne, donor representatives, teachers and a group of parents of the beneficiary children were also present at the occasion.

Security forces have so far assisted hundreds of students in the region to obtain bicycles, a popular mode of transport among the students. So far more than 800 bicycles have been distributed among deserving students in Jaffna in the past year alone. This has greatly benefitted children of low income families to overcome transport difficulties during their schooling years.

The Army's social welfare programmes have benefitted thousands of people in the country especially the backward communities in the North and East. Providing assistance to students is one of the most important public service initiatives undertaken by the troops in these regions. Many religious, corporate sector and private individuals have also extended support to these projects.
