Jaffna students presented with bicycles

[September 19 2018]

A group of deserving students in Jaffna was presented with bicycles during a ceremony held on Sunday (16 September). The initiative was taken by the Army troops in Jaffna as a part of their programme to assist children from low income families in the region.

22 bicycles, donated by a philanthropist were thus distributed among the students during the ceremony. This benevolent act of kindness had greatly assisted the students to commute between their schools and homes in the backward regions of the Peninsula. So far the Army's programme has seen over 500 bicycles being distributed among students in the region.

Beneficiary students were selected under the recommendations of school principals, teachers and state officials.

The donation ceremony was attended by the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J), Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi.

Meanwhile, troops in a bid to assist the local masses affected by the prevailing dry conditions in the Peninsula had begun to provide water to the communities in Kopay, Jaffna. The programme which began last week (12) under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 51 Division, Major General Roshan Senavirathna is continuing on a daily basis for the benefit of more than 1100 families in Kopay. Wells in respective camps are utilized to draw drinking water which is then distributed to civilian locations using Army bowsers.
