'Navy Cup 2017' held in Jaffna
Sri Lanka Navy conducted a seven - a - side under 14
football tournament in Jaffna on Saturday (05th, August). According to
navy media, the 'Navy Cup 2017' was organized for the first time in the Jaffna Peninsula. Matches were worked off at the Duraiappah Stadium in
The tournament saw 06 Jaffna school teams and 06 teams
from the island schools in Jaffna competing for the title. St Patrick's
College, Jaffna won the championship while Central College, Jaffna
became the runners up of the tournament. Awards and prizes were
presented to the teams and all the participants. An exhibition football
match between the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force women's
teams was also played on this occasion. Sri Lanka Navy women's team won
by two goals.
District Secretary- Jaffna Mr. N Vethanayahan ,
Secretary - Northern Governor, military and police officers, principals,
teachers and children were present at the occasion.
The Northern Naval Command commenced football training
for the school children on the islands in Jaffna Peninsula in 2016 under
a concept of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne.
The Navy had attached an officer and 07 other naval football players for
this purpose. So far more than 200 children have attended these football
coaching camps. The children are also provided with essential nutrients
and supplements during the training. In addition, the Navy has also
mediated in provision of required sports gear including football boots,
jerseys and other accessories for the children.
