Navy assists to clear blocked waterways

[December 30 2017]

The Wakwella Bridge in Galle which was clogged with flood debris was cleared by Sri Lanka Navy troops on Friday (29th December). Naval personnel sprang into action after being alerted by state officials, to clear the debris that had floated downstream during the recent rains and clogged under the bridge thereby restricting the free flow of water.

The Wakwella Bridge in the Southern city of Galle, stretches over the Gin Ganga river. Navy troops from the Diving Unit, Special Boat Squadron and Rapid Action Boat Squadron in a combined effort cleared the debris and averted a possible flooding of low lying areas upstream.

Meanwhile Navy troops also rendered assistance to clear a large bamboo bush which restricted the downstream flow of the Polathumodara River. A large clump of around 200 bamboo trees had broken off the bushes growing in the river banks and was blocking the water flow in the proximity of Addara Wellana road in Imaduwa, Galle. The effort took the several days of strenuous work in the crocodile infested waters of the river.
