Navy holds 'Avurudu Pola'

Chairperson of the Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) of the Ministry of Defence Mrs. S Basnayake declared open the Annual 'Avurudu Pola' (New Year Fair) of the Sri Lanka Navy gracing the festival as the Chief Guest today (10th Friday, April 2015) at the Welisara Naval Cantonment.

Mrs. Basnayake was received by the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Navy's Welfare Unit Mrs. Shalika Perera upon her arrival at the venue. Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera was also present.

The New Year festival and the trade fair was held in view of the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The mega 'Avurudu Pola' was organized under the patronage of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit.

Essential New Year items and other household items were available at a concessionary rate in order to assist the naval personnel and their families during the festive season. Chief Guest Mrs. Basnayake accompanied by senior officials visited the stalls and also exchanged pleasantries with the families.

Chief Guest also performed the traditional rite of "Kiri Ithiraweema" (Boiling of pot of milk till spill-over) at the invitation of the Commander of the Navy while opening the New Year festival. All the customary New Year games were held during the session. Mrs. Basnayake was also invited to garland the Avurudu Kumari (Miss New Year 2015) during the traditional games.

Senior Navy Officials, SVU members and a large gathering of family members were present at the occasion.
