Secretary Defence Graces Annual Prize Giving of his Alma-Mater
The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. BMUD
Basnayake was the Chief Guest at the Prize Giving Ceremony held at
the Wickramabahu Central College in Gampola today (6th March, 2015).
He is also a past pupil of the College who has placed a track record
in education and sports during the past.
Principal of the College Mr. Palitha Karunarathne
warmly welcomed the Chief Guest Mr Basnayake on his arrival to the
venue. Meanwhile, Mr. Basnayake was accorded with a Guard of Honour
comprised of a School Cadet Platoon. At the outset, Chief Guest paid
homage to the Fallen War Hero Cenotaph in the school premises.
During the session Secretary presented
Certificates and Colours to all the Prize Winners at the invitation
of the Principal. The proceedings replete with cultural shows and various
displays added an extra elegant to the function. During the session
Principal presented the last year progress review to the audience.
Recalling the past schooling years, Mr. Basnayake
praised the commitment of the past teachers that inculcated a sound
educational background on students. Such devotion of teachers
associated with the learning atmosphere of the school, brought me to
the position that where I am today, he also noted. Further speaking
Secretary said that, his parents and grandparents were also engaged
in teaching. Mr. Basnayake urged students to involve in sports
activities equivalent to their education. Meanwhile, he pledged to
extend every support to his Alma-Mater.
Secretary was also planted a tree sapling as
symbolic gesture in the school premises.
Since its inception in 1946 as the Wallahagoda
Madhya Vidyalaya with 50 students, today it stands being one of the
largest schools in the Central Province.
Ven. Maha Sanga, Regional Education Officers,
Defence Ministry Officials, Police Officers, Teachers, Parents and a
large gathering were present at the colourful event.
