Secretary attends Maj Gen Vijaya Wimalaratne memorial lecture

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Kapila Waidyaratne PC was the Chief Guest at the Maj Gen Vijaya Wimalaratne Annual Memorial Lecture, organized by the Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka (INSSSL), today (08th August).

The lecture was held at the 'Suhurupaya' auditorium in Battaramulla with the participation of Mrs. Manel Wimalaratne and family members of the late Maj Gen Wimalaratne. Maj Gen GVDUA Perera made the memorial lecture themed "Legacy of Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne and his vision for a professional military".

A video presentation on the late War Hero was shown to the audience prior to the lecture. The welcome address was made by the Director General of the INSSSL, Mr. Asanga Abeyagoonasekera.

Major General WIVKM Wimalaratne, RWP, RSP, psc was killed in action at Araly Point, Kayts Island in the Jaffna Peninsula along with Maj Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa and several other officers while on reconnaissance mission for an impending mission. The tragedy occurred exactly 26 years ago on 08th August 1992. He was the Security Forces Commander- Jaffna at the time of his death.

Maj Gen Wimalaratne, an old boy of Royal College, Colombo joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in August 1962. He rose through the ranks and held a number of important appointments. During his colourful career he had the distinction of developing the formidable Gajaba Regiment. He has also commanded many regiments including the Gemunu Watch and the Gajaba Regiment. A fine soldier, the late Major General's role during military operations especially during Operation Vadamarachchi and Operation Clean Sweep is widely recognized. He is the recipient many medal including the Rana Wickrama Padakkama,Rana Sura Padakkama and the Vadamarachchi Operations Medal.

Former Army and Navy Commanders, senior military officers and a number of distinguished invitees were also present at the occasion.
