Seva Vanitha Unit provides educational assistance to children

The Seva Vanitha Unit of the Ministry of Defence (SVU MoD) held a special programme at the Ministry auditorium to present gift packs to children of the Ministry staff, today (14th December).

The ceremony was graced by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. Kapila Waidyaratne PC. This welfare initiative taken by the Ministry's SVU, under the leadership its Chairperson Mrs. Shalini Waidyaratne as an educational incentive for the children of the Ministry staff.

Making a brief speech Secretary Waidyaratne praised the efforts of the SVU for its welfare initiatives in assisting to uplift the educational standards of these children and also requested the children to study well and be good citizens.

A group of 50 children were presented with gift packs in a symbolic gesture during the ceremony. Each gift pack includes exercise books, a pair of school shoes and a school bag. Around Rs.900, 000.00 worth of gift packs were distributed among the staff members at the programme.

SVU Chairperson Mrs. Shalini Waidyaratne, Senior Ministry officials, SVU officials and a large number of Ministry staff were present at the presenting ceremony held this morning.

Under the stewardship of the new Chairperson, the Seva Vanitha Unit has planned to carry out a number of programmes in the coming year. In addition to the welfare programmes for the Ministry staff and their families the SVU also has plants afoot to provide assistance to improve infrastructure facilities of selected public facilities such as hospitals and schools. The SVU also provides housing loans for War Heroes families and educational scholarships for children of War Heroes.
