[October 10 2018]

Today, (10 October) marks the 69th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army. Raised in 1949 as the 'Ceylon Army', it later came to be known as the ''Sri Lanka Army' after the country became a Republic in 1972.

The Sri Lanka Army played a pivotal role in the eradication of terrorism from the shores of the country. Since the end of the humanitarian operations in May 2009, it has embarked on a new mission and taken up a proactive role in the reconciliation process and the national development drive.

At present, Army troops are engaged in the construction of community housing projects, social welfare programmes, disaster relief operations and other projects with a view to uplift the living standards of the people.

Its role in the renovation of hundreds of agricultural irrigation tanks in the island especially in the Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa Districts and in the Wellassa region adds much weight to the rejuvenation of the agricultural sector of the country.

The Army organized annual Colombo Defence Seminar, military exercises including, Cormorant Strike and Mithra Shakthi, Army to Army Talks and other exchange programmes, etc has earned it recognition and fame beyond the borders of the country. The Army has also actively contributed to a number of UN peace keeping missions.

The Army had kicked off its anniversary celebrations with series of religious ceremonies. A number of multi religious blessing ceremonies were held at the Kandy Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura, Colombo and elsewhere. A ceremonial parade to commemorate the Army anniversary is to be conducted on 18th October due to the adverse weather conditions currently being experienced in the island.
