Sri Lanka Army turns 69 today

Today, (10 October) marks the 69th Anniversary of the
Sri Lanka Army. Raised in 1949 as the 'Ceylon Army', it later came to be
known as the ''Sri Lanka Army' after the country became a Republic in
The Sri Lanka Army played a pivotal role in the
eradication of terrorism from the shores of the country. Since the end
of the humanitarian operations in May 2009, it has embarked on a new
mission and taken up a proactive role in the reconciliation process and
the national development drive.
At present, Army troops are engaged in the
construction of community housing projects, social welfare programmes,
disaster relief operations and other projects with a view to uplift the
living standards of the people.
Its role in the renovation of hundreds of agricultural
irrigation tanks in the island especially in the Trincomalee,
Polonnaruwa Districts and in the Wellassa region adds much weight to the
rejuvenation of the agricultural sector of the country.
The Army organized annual Colombo Defence Seminar,
military exercises including, Cormorant Strike and Mithra Shakthi, Army
to Army Talks and other exchange programmes, etc has earned it
recognition and fame beyond the borders of the country. The Army has
also actively contributed to a number of UN peace keeping missions.
The Army had kicked off its anniversary celebrations
with series of religious ceremonies. A number of multi religious
blessing ceremonies were held at the Kandy Dalada Maligawa (Temple of
the Tooth), Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura, Colombo and elsewhere. A
ceremonial parade to commemorate the Army anniversary is to be conducted
on 18th October due to the adverse weather conditions currently being
experienced in the island.
