Sri Lankan Peacekeepers in Haiti Honoured

Over 850 members of Sri Lankan peacekeepers in the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) were decorated with the MINUSTAH medal recently (12th Thursday, March 2015) for their dedicated and commendable service rendered in assisting the UN command to establish peace and stability in Haiti.

Chief Guest on the occasion, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of Mission Ms. Sandra Honor‚ praised the Sri Lankan peacekeepers for their dedicated service and remarkable courage. She especially highlighted many activities conducted by the peacekeepers beyond their duty such as medical and dental care, youth occupational training, blood donation, distribution of water and food.

Speaking at the ceremony UN military component Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Jos‚ Luiz Jaborandy Jr (Brazil) said that, Sri Lanka's efforts will contribute to build a better future for the Haitian community.

During the stay in Haiti, Sri Lankan peacekeepers in association with Haitian National Police force have conducted numerous joint foot and motorized patrols to ensure the safety in most residential areas of the country.

Since 2004 Sri Lanka has continuously deployed more than 800 Peacekeepers comprised of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel on six-month duty rotation basis.

Distinguished invitees, large number of military and police authorities along with native business leaders in the region and senior Sri Lankan military officers were present at the occasion.
