State Minister Wijewardene meets Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon

The State Minister of Defence, Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene, making a four-day official visit left the country to the Kingdom of Thailand on Monday (08 October). The State Minister is making the visit upon an invitation extended by the Thai government.

The State Minister's delegation includes, the Secretary to the State Ministry of Defence, Mr. Sunil Samaraweera and several senior military officers.

During his visit to the Asian nation, State Minister Wijewardene met the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Thailand Hon. General Prawit Wongsuwon, at the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday (09). Mr. Sunil Samaraweera and Mrs. Kshenuka Seneviratne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand also sat on the Sri Lankan side during the talks.

During the ensuing discussion, the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister expressed his gratitude to the State Minister for accepting the invitation and making the visit to his country. He also mentioned of the age old ties as both countries celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. He much appreciated the warm hospitality extended by Sri Lanka during the Thai Prime Minister's visit to the island in July, this year (2018).

State Minister Wijewardene also thanked the Thai government for the invitation to visit the country and also mentioned the age old cultural, religious and trade ties that spans over centuries and also stressed the importance to strengthen defence cooperation between both countries. The State Minister highlighted Sri Lanka's potential as a future maritime hub and its conducive geostrategic location in the region for international trade and transport. He also conveyed his best wishes to the host country as Thailand will take over the chair of the ASEAN in 2019.

The State Minister also visited several important places during his visit to the Thai Kingdom.
