War Heroes remembrance ceremony held
The annual War Hero remembrance ceremony was held
under the patronage of the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces,
President Maithripala Sirisena at the War Hero Cenotaph in Sri
Jayewardenepura, Kotte today evening (19th Friday, May 2017).
State Minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene,
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi and
Secretary to the State Ministry of Defence Mr. APG Kithsiri were present
at the occasion.
Upon arrival the President was accorded a guard of
honour. Later two minutes of silence was observed in memory of the
fallen War Heroes. The annual remembrance ceremony was organized by the
Ranaviru Seva Authority (RSA) and on behalf of the organization
Chairperson of the RSA Mrs. Anoma Fonseka delivered the welcome speech.
Subsequently, a multi religious blessing ceremony was
also conducted by religious dignitaries to invoke blessing on the fallen
Speaking at the event president recalled the
importance of the commemoration of war heroes, who sacrificed their
lives and limbs to protect the motherland form ruthless terrorists.
President also said that, as the government we always
look to uplift standards of military forces by providing fresh
technologies, knowledge and skills. During the past two and half years,
we have provided number of facilities, privileges and allowances for the
benefit of war heroes. We also uplifted the current housing project with
a vision of providing a house for each and every war hero.
Further president said that, as a country looking for
development, we have to strengthen our military forces on safeguarding
freedom, democracy, national security and regional security. We should
always fulfill our responsibilities and duties on fallen and disabled
war heroes, as well as uplifting the standards of the present tri forces
personnel, he added.
President also valued the additional duties undertaken
by security forces personnel, specially the service they provide at
emergency situations, for social welfare and for development.
Floral tributes were laid by President Sirisena, State
Minister Wijewardene and Secretary Hettiarachchi and other distinguished
guests at the Cenotaph during the ceremony.
Religious dignitaries, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka,
Chief of Defence Staff, tri forces commanders, Director General of CSD,
state officials, senior military officers, distinguished invitees and
family members of the fallen war heroes were also present at the
