Weather reports forecast strong winds

Weather condition to improve in the coming days

The Department of Meteorology has warned of possible sudden increase in winds in several parts of the country. Issuing a red alert, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has cautioned of possible increase of wind speed up to 50-60 kmph (Particularly in the afternoon and night) on the North, Northcentral and Northwestern Provinces and in the Trincomalee and Matale Districts. There will be winds with speeds up to 40-50 kmph elsewhere in the country, the report further states.

The Met Dept. also predicts of showers or thundershowers in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces. Showers will also occur in the Mannar, Jaffna and Anuradhapura districts as well.
The weather report issued at 05.30am today (09 August) also forecasts of fairly heavy rainfall above 75 mm to be experienced at some places in the Western, Central, Northwestern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts.

The Met Dept. requests the naval and fishing community to be more vigilant against rough seas due to high winds. Sea areas extending from Negombo to Batticaloa via Mannar, Kankasanturai and Trincomalee will be rough at times as wind speeds are likely to increase up to 60-70 kmph at times. Sudden increase of wind speeds up to 80 kmph are also possible over the sea areas particularly in the afternoon and night.

The prevailing windy condition over the country and surrounding sea areas is expected to reduce during next few days from tomorrow.
