‘Fox Hill Chess Fiesta 2019’ concludes with the acquaintance of War Heroes

‘Fox Hill Chess Fiesta 2019’, the first ever Inter-Institutions International Rating Team Chess Championship concluded with a grand Awards Ceremony held at the Sino - Lanka Friendship Auditorium (Nelum Pokuna) in Diyatalawa, last Monday.  Commander Security Forces –West, Major General LM Mudalige graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Weera Matha, Visharadha Sujatha Attanayake was present as the Guest of Honor.

The Sri Lanka Navy Chess team won the Championship title while the Peradeniya University was placed Runner up in the open event.  The competition saw 32 teams, taking part in events under three categories. The Women’s Championship was won by the Moratuwa University whilst the Peradeniya University became the Runner up.

The ‘Para Championship’, in the disable category was won by the team representing the Ragama Ranaviru Sevana beating the Kamburupitiya Abhimansala II team.

One of the highlights of the awards ceremony was the presenting of a souvenir to the renowned veteran artiste, Weeramatha  Visaradha Sujatha Atthanayake who was accompanied by  her husband, Mr Navaratna Atthanayake. to receive the memento presented by Brigadier Kithsiri Ekanayaka, Chairman of the Army Chess Committee. Weera Matha Sujatha Attanayake’s son, Captain Chanaka Sanjeewa Atthanayake, sacrificed his life for the nation while on duty at Pooneryn on, 25th September 1992. He was an infantry colleague of Brigadier Kithsiri Ekanayake.
