Rainy weather shows no sign of improvement

  • Met Department forecasts more rains over the weekend
  • Authorities on alert to face emergency situations as heavy rains continue

The latest weather forecast of the Meteorological Department for tomorrow (07) predicts showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Heavy showers about 100mm are expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Eastern, Uva and North Central provinces and in the Matale and Mullaitivu districts during the evening or night.

Maximum rainfall of 72 mm in the last 24 hours was recorded from Kukule ganga.

A flood warning has been issued to Gin Ganga and Attanagalu Oya.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a Level 2 (Amber) landslide warning to several areas in the Ratnapura, Matara, Kalutara and Galle districts. The early landslide warning also includes a Level 1 (Yellow) warning to several areas in the Colombo, Gampaha, Hambantota, Kandy and Kegalle districts.

Meanwhile DMC, NBRO and other relevant state agencies are keeping a watchful eye on the developing situation as the rains continue to lash across many parts of the country.
