Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Guest of Honour
in PMA Passing Out Parade

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army currently in Kakul, Pakistan on the invitation of Major General lftikhar Hassan Chaudhary, Commandant, Pakistan Military Academy graced the Passing Out Parade of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) on Saturday (21 October) as the Guest of Honour.

By sheer coincidence, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, happened to be a course-mate with the incumbent Commandant of the Pakistan Military Academy several years ago in the same Pakistan Military Academy. Upon Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage’s arrival at the Parade Ground, he was honoured by graduating Cadets presenting a salute.

The Passing Out Parade of Cadets of the 148th PMA Long Course, 67th Integrated Course, 35th Technical Graduate Course and 22nd Lady Cadet Course got underway at the Pakistan Military Academy premises. Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Pakistan Naval Staff, attended as the Chief Guest for the occasion.

Two Cadets of the Sri Lanka Army, who received training in the PMA, were also present at the Passing Out Parade. The Army Chief also took time off to interact with two Sri Lankan Cadets and foreign Cadets who received graduation. In another rare gesture, the son of Major General D.P Welagedara RSP VSV USP psc IG, was among the Sri Lankan Cadets who passed out.

During the colourful parade, the day’s Chief Guest, together with the Parade Commander reviewed it and received the salute from the special dais.

After a few minutes, the Chief Guest presented the coveted Sword of Honour to the Academy’s Senior Under Officer Muhammad Abdur Rehman Awan of the 148th PMA Long Course, the President’s Gold Medal to Battalion Senior Under Officer Muhammad Hamza Khalid of the 148th PMA Long Course and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Overseas Gold Medal to Battalion Senior Under Officer Shreejan Baniya of the 148th PMA Long Course from Nepal.

Similarly, the Commandant’s Canes were awarded to Course Under Officer Muhammad Najam Azam of the 67th Integrated Course and Course Under Officer Fareeha Kainaat Arif of the 22nd Lady Cadet Course. Chief of Army Staff Cane to Company Quarter Master Sergeant Frasat Toufique of the 35th Technical Graduate Course.

Mrs. Janaki Liyanage, President, Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha Unit and Major General D.P Welagedara RSP VSV USP psc IG, Military Liaison Officer (MLO) were also associated with the occasion.
