Foreign bulk carrier runs aground close to Little Basses

Neither hull damage nor oil leaking into the sea was reported from the distressed foreign vessel at the Little Basses, said the Navy Spokesperson Captain Indika De Silva speaking to defence.lk today (24 Jan).

Bulk Carrier ‘MV Eurosun’ on her way to Trincomalee, from Abu Dhabi Port, UAE carrying clinkers was reported run aground at the Little Basses area, the island’s south-eastern coast.

The Naval and Air Force crafts arrived at the scene have commenced investigations following a distress call from the Bulk Carrier yesterday (Jan 23).

According to Captain De Silva, there are no reports on water leaking into the vessel so far.

The Navy media said it carries a shipment of over 33,000 MT of clinker and storage of about 720 MT of bunker.

Navy ship and a craft with their divers had responded immediately on receipt of a distress call to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Colombo.

Aerial reconnaissance conducted by Sri Lanka Air Force covering the sea area has captured several aerial footages into the incident, the Air Force Spokesperson Group Capt. Dushan Wijesinghe said.

MRCC Colombo located at the Navy Headquarters is on high alert and further investigations are conducted, Navy Spokesperson said.
