Warning on strong winds and rough seas - Met Department

Weather forecast issued today (July 10) by the Met Department for the next 24 hours warns on strong gusty winds up to 60 kmph likely at times over the western slope of the Central hills and further, gusty winds up to 50 kmph at times are likely in Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, Trincomalee district and Western coastal areas.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Southern provinces and heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

A few showers will occur at North-Central Province while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Eastern and Uva provinces during the evening or night.

Issuing the marine weather forecast for sea areas around the island, Met Dept warns fishing and naval communities to be vigilant while informing them on the danger to venture into Sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota due to strong gusty winds likely over deep and shallow sea areas surrounding the Island owing to active Southwest monsoon conditions.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, Met Dept added.

South-westerly winds will occur in the sea areas around the island and the wind speed will be (30-40) kmph that can be increased up to (60-70) kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanturai to Potuvil via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

The wind speed can be increased up to 50 kmph at times in the other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota will be very rough and the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Mannar via Kankasanturai can be rough at times.

The forecast confirmed the other sea areas around the island can be fairly rough at times.
