Weather update-low-level atmospheric disturbance moving away

April 12, 2022

According to the latest weather forecast issued by the Met Department at noon today (12), the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka is moving away from the Island.

Rain is predicted to occur in Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in Galle and Matara districts while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere during the evening or night. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places in Eastern, Uva, North-central and Northern provinces, it says.

Meanwhile the National Building Research Organization had issued a landslide warning on Monday (11) to several areas in Badulla, Colombo, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island. Heavy showers can be expected at some places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Hambantota via Mannar, Puttalam, Galle and Matara, the forecast further predicts.

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. Winds speed can increase up to 35-40 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota.

Due to the apparent northward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka from 05th to 15th (April). The nearest areas of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today are Tayliankudiyiruppu (Mannar District), Kanakarayankulam, Nedunkeni (Vauniya District) and Naddiankandal (Mullattivu District), it further adds.
