A Record of Discussion was signed recently between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) in view of their support to establish an in-house advanced oil spill incident management training programme for disaster mitigation and marine environment protection, at the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Station Waruna.

Director General of SLCG Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake and JICA Chief Representative Yamada Tetsuya signed the Record of Discussion.

The SLCG said this was signed in view of the discussions held during the recent past.

Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and JICA had conducted the advisory service to enhance the oil spill response capabilities of SLCG through its phase I project from 2015- 2017 ( basic coastal oil spill response training up to tier 1) and phase II from 2019 – 2021 (oil spill response skills at sea by boat).

Accordingly, phase III was conducted on Feb 12 this year by six JCG and JICA officials while the initial planning meeting was conducted on Feb 13 at the SLCG Rear Headquarters, the SLACG also said.

SLCG Director Training Capt. HAC Priyantha, JICA Senior Representative Takashima Kiyofumi and its Senior Project Specialist Cabral Indika attended the occasion.
