Landslide warning issued for several areas of 10 districts
May 19, 2020Issuing a landslide early warning message yesterday (18), the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has earmarked few areas in 10 districts as vulnerable to landslides due to prevailing torrential rain conditions in the island.
Early warning has earmarked several regions in Galle, Matara, Matale, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Kegalle, Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala, and Kandy districts for likely landslides from 2.00 pm today, which is valid for next 24 hours.
NBRO also advices citizens to be vigilant on potential landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures and ground subsidence, if rain continues, which has exceeded 75mm during past 24 hours. It also warns to be on alert about cracks on ground and walls, sudden presence of water springs, developing of muddy water and disappearance of existing sources.
