SL Coastguard releases more Sea Turtle hatchlings to sea

February 07, 2023

The Sri Lanka Coastguard (SLCG) released more than 140 sea turtle hatchlings to sea from Mirissa and Balapitiya recently.

According to SLCG media, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard had conserved 13569 turtle eggs and released 1153 hatchlings into the sea in 2023.

Coast Guard personnel attached to Life-Saving Posts in Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Moragolla, and Balapitiya had recovered 2052 sea turtle eggs from places close to their natural habitat during the first week (Feb 1 – 6) of this month alone, it says.

The SLCG has released thousands of sea turtle hatchlings to sea under its Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP).

The SLCG takes every effort to conserve turtle eggs in or around their natural habitat to ensure its protection as sea turtles are classified as endangered species.
