Hundreds of SL Coast Guard personnel join hands on
HACGAM Beach Cleaning Day

September 27, 2023

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) conducted a beach cleaning programme spanning four Coast Guard Regions in parallel to the Head of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (HACGAM) Beach Cleaning Day recently (Sep 23) says the coastguard media.

The SLCG is chairing the Marine Environmental Protection Group at the HACGAM. The beach cleaning programme drew several hundred coast guard personnel from SLCG’s Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western regions, it says.

This environmental protection initiative showcases the Sri Lanka Coast Guard's commitment to environmental protection and their dedication to safeguarding the nation's coastal areas.

A large amount of waste materials and garbage was collected from beaches during the cleaning programme thereby preventing it from polluting the ocean and harming marine ecology, it says.

Improperly discarded waste materials such as plastic waste pose a severe threat to marine ecosystems, as it breaks down into microplastics that can be ingested by marine animals and eventually enter the food chain. Millions of tons of plastic materials enter the marine environment every year posing a severe environmental and health threat to marine and human life as well.
