Inclement weather to continue further- Met. Department

  • NBRO issues landslide warning to several districts.
  • Flood warning in Kalu, Gin and Nilwala rivers.

The Met. Department says the prevailing showery condition in the South-western parts of the country is expected to continue further.

In a weather forecast for tomorrow (Sep 30) issued at noon today the Department says showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Fairly heavy showers of about 75mm can be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts.

A few showers will occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura district.

The maximum rainfall of 120 mm in the last 24 hours was recorded at Kukule Ganga in the Kalutara district.

Fairly strong winds of about 40-45 kmph can be expected at times in Western slopes of the Central hills, Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The Met. Department also predicts showers or thundershowers to occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara.

Winds will be South-westerly with speeds of 30-40 kmph  which can increase up to 50 kmph.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Meanwhile the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a Level 2 ( Amber) landslide warning to Ayagama, Pelmadulla, Kuruwita, Kalawana, Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, Ratnapura, Elapatha and Niwithigala Areas in the Ratnapura district, Neluwa in the Galle district, Ingiriya in the Kalutara district, Pitabeddara and Kotapola in the Matara district and Pasbage Korale in the Kandy district.

The NBRO’s latest landslide early warning also includes a Level 1 (Yellow) warning to Yatiyantota, Ruwanwella, Deraniyagala, Dehiovita and Ratnapura areas in the Ratnapura district. Matugama, Walallawita, Bulathsinhala and Agalawatte in the Kalutara district, Elpitiya in the Galle district, Walasmulla in the Hambantota district and Mulatiyana and Athuraliya in the Matara district.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) citing the Irritation Department has informed of a flood warning in Nilwala Kalu and Gin rivers.

Meanwhile the Navy has deployed several relief teams to assist communities affected by minor floods and emergencies.
