        •    Defence Ministry welcomes ‘New Year’

The Defence Ministry celebrated the dawn of the New Year amidst religious blessings today (Jan 1, 2021).

Greeting the Ministry staff for the New Year, Defence Secretary Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne during his address said “With the beginning of this New Year, we are destined to work in a challenging environment amidst the COVID-19 threat.

Gen. Gunaratne hoisted the National Flag followed by the reciting of the National Anthem.

A two minute silence was observed in honour of the fallen War Heroes and all employees of the Ministry took the Government Servant's Oath during the session.

He urged all to work collectively and continue to provide the expected services of the Defence Ministry to the general public, even in the face of this pandemic situation.

“You have to pay your personal attention to this situation and make sure that healthcare guidelines are followed properly, which would enable us to continue our day-to-day work”, he added.

Citing four pillars of the President’s election manifesto, ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’; a Safe and a Secure Country for all, a Productive Citizen, a Happy Family and a Righteous, Disciplined & Law Abiding Society, he urged the necessity of a dedicated approach envisioning a prosperous country.

“My determination is to make ‘Productive Citizens’ from this Ministry”, he stated.

Ven. Maha Sanga, Chairperson of Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit Chithrani Gunaratne, senior ministry officials, senior tri forces and Police officers, Heads of all institutes under the purview of the Ministry and a large number of staff members were also present at the occasion.
