Defence Secretary Undertakes Inspection Tour of Batticaloa

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) conducted an inspection tour of the Batticaloa region in the Eastern Province today (June 03), with the objective of evaluating the prevailing security situation.

During his visit, the Defence Secretary held discussions with senior officers from the tri-services and the police, stationed in the area, focusing on current security concerns and the readiness of forces to respond effectively to any emergencies.

He commended the steadfast dedication of the tri-forces and police personnel in maintaining security and acknowledged their significant contributions to humanitarian operations. The Defence Secretary also highlighted the importance of fostering strong collaboration between security forces and local communities. He instructed senior officers to actively engage with residents to build mutual trust and harmony, particularly in the culturally diverse and multi-religious Batticaloa region, while carrying out security operations.

He stressed the need for continuous vigilance and responsibility in addressing potential anti-state or extremist activities, particularly in the Eastern Province. He further directed that the tri-forces and the Police Special Task Force jointly formulate comprehensive plans to address such threats.

The Defence Secretary also pointed out the necessity of paying increased attention to the security of key areas such as Batticaloa, Pasikuda, and Arugam Bay, which are prominent tourist destinations attracting both domestic and international visitors.

His visit reaffirmed the Sri Lankan Government’s and the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to enhancing security cooperation and encouraging active community involvement in maintaining peace and stability.
