Sri Lanka Army Assists Urgent Irrigation Repairs Following Cyclone Damage
December 10, 2025The Sri Lanka Army has been deployed to support emergency restoration of several critical irrigation structures severely affected by the recent cyclone, which caused widespread damage across multiple districts.
Troops are currently engaged in repair work at the Siyambalagaswewa Tank, where urgent rehabilitation is underway to stabilize the structure and ensure uninterrupted water supply to surrounding communities.
In addition, Army personnel have been assigned to assist the Irrigation Department and the Mahaweli Authority in restoring the ancient Elahera Anicut, a historically significant waterway vital for agricultural activities in the region. Their support is expected to expedite ongoing repairs and strengthen the anicut ahead of future monsoon cycles.
Further, restoration efforts include Mahalindawewa tank bund repairs, where the Army is working to reinforce damaged sections of the bund to prevent potential breaches, and essential repairs to the spillway of Yodawewa, which suffered structural impact due to heavy rainfall and overflowing water levels.
These coordinated efforts form part of the nationwide disaster response mechanism mobilized in the aftermath of the cyclone. By supporting technical agencies in critical irrigation repairs, the Sri Lanka Army continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding essential water infrastructure and ensuring the protection of nearby communities.
