Deputy Minister of Defence Underscores Government’s Commitment to
Health Sector Reform at SLCOMM Sessions

The Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine (SLCOMM) has emerged as a cornerstone institution within the defence medical framework. Its steadfast commitment to continuous professional development, research, training, and policy contribution has played a decisive role in strengthening the medical preparedness of the Tri Forces. 
 
The 9th Annual Academic Sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine (SLCOMM) commenced yesterday (13 Feb) at the Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla. The ceremony was held in grandeur and was graced by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.) as the Chief Guest. Dr. Duminda Ariyarathne, Consultant General Surgeon and Immediate Past President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, attended as the Guest of Honour. 

The Deputy Minister in his address, highlighted the Government’s comprehensive efforts to strengthen Sri Lanka’s healthcare system while reinforcing the importance of foundational readiness. He further noted that military medicine operates in a uniquely demanding environment, requiring not only clinical competence but also discipline, resilience, leadership, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. Referring to the theme, “Back to Basics: Reinforcing Foundational Readiness in Military Medicine,” he stressed the need to uphold core principles such as preparedness, ethical integrity, and professional excellence, even amid rapid technological advancement and evolving security challenges.

Emphasizing that health is a fundamental human right and central to the national vision of “A Thriving Nation - a Beautiful Life,” the Deputy Minister outlined several key government initiatives aimed at reforming the health sector. He also highlighted systemic reforms to reduce the financial burden on families, including increased state investment, strengthened transparency mechanisms, and digitization efforts to improve efficiency. 

The event was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including the President and Executive Committee Members of SLCOMM, Army and Air Force Commanders, Chief of Staff of Navy, Senior Officers of Tri Forces and Health Services, and international delegates.
