May 27, 2021

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) along with Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) raising their concerns over the debris washed ashore from the fire stricken ship launched a special security arrangement with the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) and also to investigate the impact on the coastal environment.

The SLN said the authorities are now educating the regional community from Dickowita to Chilaw and Wellawatte to Panadura.

According to the details, containers including various parts that are falling overboard have washed ashore and a partly burned container was seen at the Thalahena beach, Negombo yesterday (May 26).

Along with the current weather pattern, it is likely that debris will reach the coast alongside Dikovita to Chilaw, the SLN also said, warning the regional populace and fishing communities not to get in touch with such elements as they could be harmful.

The SLN Ship Sindurala as well as Indian Coast Guard Maritime Pollution Control Ships ‘Vajra’ and ‘Vaibhav’ have been deployed on the site where MV X-PRESS PEARL is lying, it also said.
