Alert on rising water levels and likely floods

The water levels of Kalu and Kelani rivers are on the rise as a result of prevailing torrential rains, said Pradeep Kodippili, the Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) issuing a notice today (June 4).

The catchment areas of Kalu River basin have experienced downpours above 175mm and therefore, DMC warns flood situations may take place in Horana, Agalawatta, Ingiriya, Palindanuwara, Bulathsinhala, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Madurawala and Kalutara Divisional Secretariat divisions.

Meanwhile, people living in Kelani river basins of Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa and Wattala Divisional Secretariat divisions are also requested by the DMC to remain on alert on significant levels of floods.

Apart from that, people living in lowland areas of Attanagalu Oya and Gin River have also been advised to be on alert.

Military aids and relief measures are on standby and plans are afoot for evacuations, if required, in keeping with healthcare guidelines, Kodippli affirmed.
