Navy launches Ship in a Box maritime training

Sri Lanka Navy’s maiden Ship in a Box (SIAB) training facility was inaugurated at the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) Headquarters yesterday ( July 07) with the presence of the Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne.

The fully-fledged training model was a project sponsored by the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime (UNODC) under the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP), the Navy said.  

The SIAB will facilitate to carry out Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) trainings conducted by the SBS for local and foreign stakeholders from the maritime law enforcement authorities, with improved standards.

SBS personnel also staged a demonstration elaborating the practical aspects of the SIAB.

The event was organized in compliance with COVID-19 guidelines due to pandemic concerns.

Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander Eastern Naval Area Rear Admiral YN Jayarathne, Head of Global Maritime Crime Programme at UNODC Alan Cole, Technology Project Expert from Global Maritime Crime Programme Geraint Roberts and a limited number of senior officers and SBS personnel were present at the occasion.
